Customer Review: lovin this tv
I love my mitsubishi tv i am not a big sport fan but i do like movies i am not impressed with blue ray dvds . But i do watch dvd movies all i can say is they look great i have directtv with hd channels i set my hd box to 1080p and my channels are crystal clear. my husband let me pick the tv and i decided not to waste another $1000 for lcd and all that stuff i guess i am a litlle old fashion. when we didn't know about lcd and plasma then the dlp was all the rage . well i can see the picture clear and the color is great plus for the length of time these tvs last why waste more money for the lcd or plasma. this is my second big screen tv the last one only lasted for 5 years we are currently looking for a part to have it repaired so far the cheapest part is $700 we are on our fourth month waiting for the part. my old tv 32 in which is 12yrs old has never need a part and did i mention it is 12yrs old the color is great everyone who sees it asks us how much we paid for it $350.00 12yrs ago. my kids play xbox 360 and wii systems on it. my last big screen two bulbs and a fan now some sort of board . it cost over $2000 originally .
Customer Review: Very Good HDTV
We decided to go HD after a long time of waiting. We, for a very long time, used a Toshiba Rear-projection TV at 50" in our living room. We decided that we would need a TV large enough to take the place of that TV and to make it not look so small. DLP is the right choice for this since you can get a much larger screen size at a lower cost than LCD or Plasma. Since we had good luck with our other rear-projection, we figured that we would have good luck with this TV. Having it for a month now, there have been no issues and our view experience is great. The matted screen makes glares much less harsh (our old TV had a glossy screen). The wight of this TV is extremely light for its size, our friend has a 42" LCD which is much heavier than this. As long as you're planning to put the TV on a stand, the lack of it being a flat panel shouldn't be a big deal. 1080p content through our Xbox 360 is very detailed and sharp and the TV never lags behind nor have I seen any "rainbow effect" from this TV during normal viewing. The only con with this TV is the build in speakers to the TV are very tinny and all around subpar. Although if you use this TV hooked up to an AV receiver you will have no issues, you buy a TV for the picture, not the sound. All around I am very happy we bought this TV. I've had nothing but good luck with Mitsubishi, in fact, we still own an old Mitsubishi console color TV from the early 80s that works perfectly. You should have no regrets in buying this DLP HDTV.

Amazon.com has once again outdone itself by producing the Kindle 2, currently the best selling e-book reader in the market. Here is a list of new features that are found on the new Kindle 2.

1. Its slimmer. The new Kindle 2 is much slimmer than its predecessor (the first Kindle). At just 0.36" thick it is even slimmer than the iPhone. This new svelte design feels better on your hands and its back is made of a special material that provides better grip.

2. New design. This new model has a more balanced design. All the edges and corners are gently curved, giving it a very contemporary look. Compared to the first Kindle, this new model sports a more modern and minimalist design. The new Kindle 2 also comes with stereo speakers.

3. 5-way controller. The older model has a small scroll wheel to view large pages or documents. In the Kindle 2, a new 5-way controller has been incorporated to not only help you scroll pages, but also have better accuracy in navigating within the screen.

4. Smaller keyboard and buttons. Every single button on the Kindle 2 has been downsized, which is a big improvement. The reduced keyboard size means that you can comfortably hold the reader without accidentally pressing the buttons. The placement and design of the page turn buttons have also improved.

5. Improved page turn buttons. In the older model, the page turn buttons are huge 3-inch buttons located on the edges (on both sides) of the reader. The size of the buttons and placement has caused me to make hundreds and hundreds of inadvertent page turns in the past year. In the Kindle 2, the size of the page turn buttons have been reduced and is now conveniently placed on the center of the side edges. The page will only turn if you press down the button until you hear a tactile 'click'. This is one of my favorite changes in the Kindle 2 as it greatly reduces accidental page turns.

6. Page turn speed. In the first Kindle model, page turn can sometimes be sluggish, especially when you have bought and stored many books in the reader. The page turns on the Kindle 2 is noticeably faster. Amazon claims that the page-turn speed on the new model has increased by 25%.

7. Battery life. The battery life of the Kindle 2 is almost two times longer than its predecessor. With the wireless function on, the reader can last up to 4 days on a single charge. Without the wireless function, it can last up to 14 days.

8. Wireless connectivity. On top of the Whispernet connection, the new Kindle 2 also supports 3G connections (thanks to Sprint). The 3G connectivity greatly increases the speed of downloads.

9. Dictionary. In this new e-book reader, you can find out the meaning of a word by just pointing at it. When you move the cursor over a particular word, the meaning will automatically pop up.

Philips SCA050 Indoor Amplified UHF/VHF/FM/HDTV Antenna

Whether in homes, factories, offices, airports, or on the street, it's hard to imagine a place where Philips is absent. What Philips wants is to make your life and work easier - and more fun! And Philips continuously explores new ways to improve products and to offer innovative products to its consumers. Philips. "Let's Make Things Better".
Customer Review: not happy
I'M not at all happy with my Philips sca050 antenna. The antenna does not come with the 12v DC power cord. Please be advised? Do not puchase unless you are abie to get the right type of cord. The cord you will need is a 12vDC 100ma. I do hope this helps. Thanks; J.C.
Customer Review: Worthless product
I agree with the reviewer from Houston. My old rabbit ears work better and I don't have to waste electricity by plugging it in. Rabbit ears pick up 13 channels. The Philips SCA050 Indoor Amplified UHF/VHF/FM/HDTV Antenna picks up three channels but fuzzier and they were all VHF. There is no info on the Philips website. After a few phone calls I finally got a customer service agent who treated me like an idiot and had no answers. Save yourself some money and go to the closet and pull out a wire hanger.

Panasonic wireless home theaters are among the best home theater systems in the industry, combining the best aspects of funtionality, affordability and aesthetic value.

One of the main points of having a Panasonic wireless home theater is the wireless aspect. For everyone out there who enjoys having high quality surround sound in their homes when they watch their favorite movies or listen to music, the challenge of having to string foot upon foot of speaker wire and then attempt to attach it to molding or hide it behind furniture has been the annoying downside to their home theater system.

With the advent of affordable wireless audio technology on the market, this daunting task has become a thing of the past. Now, Panasonic wireless home theaters give one the ability to position the constellation of large and small speakers and sub woofers around the living room and around the house, even, and not have to contend with hiding and placing miles of speaker wire.

Many Panasonic wireless home theaters have slim tall main speakers that have a sleek, sophisticated, modern look to them. In addition to the overall appearance of these high quality speakers, they are smaller than their heavy bulky ancestors of the past, so they take up less room and are much more adaptable to any living room arrangement. In addition to the versatile main speaker towers, the wireless technology allows one to fine tune the surround sound experience by placing small, decorative and freestanding small speakers anywhere within range of the wireless receiver. Now, one can place the small speakers on end tables where they take up a very small amount of space, and deliver all the subtle tones and sounds from different areas of the room.

Many Panasonic wireless home theaters now come standard with and iPod dock. This important feature allows one's home theater system to continue to keep pace with the demands of modern functionality by allowing users to simply plug in their portable iPod and immediately listen to their library of favorite tunes. Some systems have even made the iPod dock available on one of the tall slim speaker towers, thereby providing quick and easy access.

For the overall movie and music experience, the wireless home theater is a must for bringing theater quality sound and detail into the living room. The look and feel of the system is sleek and modern and the features allow one to customize their living room without having to string foot upon foot of seaker wire. Being able to place the various smaller speakers absolutely anywhere enhances the overall sound effect quality and turns living rooms into surround sound theaters, while at the same time avoiding the bulky space wasting realities of older, traditional speakers and woofers.

Customer Review: Died after 10 months
Great TV when it works. Mine died on me after 10 months, well within the warranty period, but Envision expects me to pay for packaging and shipping to Texas, which will run me around $200 !!!! They only have 3 service centers in the States.
Customer Review: Great Display; NO EPG!
Wonderful picture quality and no problems with the unit since purchase (11/15/08). So lifelike that it almost appears 3-D. This is my first LCD digital TV purchase and I have it hooked up to an over the air digital TV signal. Stunning clarity. You do need to tweak the display controls somewhat to get the best picture quality; the default settings will not give you the best display. I have not played a DVD or any other source with this set but I would expect the quality to be very high also. At the time of my purchase (11/15/08 for $450) this was the lowest priced 32" LCD that I could find. The major drawback is the lack of an EPG (electronic program guide). If you are only going to use this set for gaming, watching movies or have cable or satellite; then the lack of an EPG will not be a major consideration. Without an EPG, you are not able to preview the upcoming programming for digital TV stations. With some digital converter boxes, you are able to view programming hours in advance. Also, the digital tuner in the set does not pull in stations as well as digital converter boxes that I do have. Using the same source in approximately the same location, the signal for this unit is not as good; although more than adequate for good reception. I would have given this unit 5 stars if there was an EPG included and the reception was better. All in all, a great 32" LCD TV at a great price in spite of it's limitations.

Having been around since 1919, RCA has been one of the leaders in the entertainment and electronic industry. Making everything from professional video cameras used for televised sporting events to personal portable CD players to brand new technology such as the USB Turntable which allows you to play old vinyl records and convert the audio from them into mp3 files on your computer's hard drive, RCA deals with just about every form of electronic devise and keeps one step ahead on the latest technologies available. One of their more popular items is the various forms of RCA home theater systems.

With an RCA home theater system, you have a wide range of choices. Television monitors range in size from 22 inches to over 50 inches. Surround sound comes in either 5.1 surround sound or 6.1 surround sound. Along with a great range of options, when you get an RCA system you're getting some of the most top notch, top of the line, most up to date technology around. You can pick from various DVD players, radios, speaker wattage... it's a veritable mix and match of what you can chose to have in your living room, all while having the satisfaction that you're buying the best on the market at a great price.

An RCA home theater system is also energy efficient, making it better for the environment than ever before. In 2008, all models were compliant with Energy Star regulators, and were even equipped with a Dynamic Room Light Sensor which is able to detect any ambient light in the room (such as sunlight coming in through a window or a lamp in the room being on) and automatically adjust the brightness of the screen accordingly, using less power to showcase your favorite TV show or DVD. These allow you to be entertained with TV (America's number 1 pastime) as you have before, but by using less energy you're saving the environment as well as lowering your electric bills (which helps save your bank account!).

RCA home theater systems have some of the most affordable prices around while having more features than the competition including richer video quality on higher resolution 1080p HDTV systems, clearer more crisp audio with their high quality 5.1 or 6.1 surround sound speakers, and universal remotes to help you operate every function of your home entertainment center with a single device. It's no wonder RCA is one of the top brands in the electronics world today.

Consumers are going crazy over the HD plasma TV models on the market but should you buy one too? They are well known of the amazing picture quality offered as well at size of the extra large screen that can be up to 70". A HD plasma TV can produce up to 8.6 billion colors and each of them with amazing precision. The viewing angle is 16 units wide and 9 unit high so you will be watching all your television programs and movies in luxury.

HD plasma TV models are also very durable. They have a long life with an estimated 60,000 hours of viewing. While they are expensive they may be well worth it if you watch plenty of TV and movies. They also cost less than LCD flat panel TV's when you compare the same size of screen. However it is important to know that this TV uses more electricity than a traditional TV set. On average you are looking at 700 watts of power to operate it.

A HD plasma TV is able to offer you these amazing features because of the thousands of display cells featured. They are used to link the x and y axis panels together. The cells have slots with neon and xenon gases in them. A HD plasma TV offers three primary colors - red, green, and blue that are made from the gases. The set up does not contain mercury so you don't have to worry about the effects from it.

You do have to be careful when moving this TV because the components are quite fragile. If you aren't careful with it the TV can suffer from a burn in effect that means the frame of a picture will linger on the screen longer than it should. If you decide that buying a HD plasma TV is right for you then make sure you get one that comes with a long term warranty just in case you experience any problems. It is also a good idea to conduct some research online so you get the right model of HD plasma TV for your money.

Customer Review: Blurry
My doctor's office has one of these. There are no significant viewing angle problems. However, the picture is blurry. It is obviously NOT just the source that is to blame, as there is another TV in the same office, connected to the same source, and its picture is much better. Bring back the picture tube (CRT). Even the best LCDs still do not look as good as a quality picture tube, and the average LCD looks horrible. Most LCD screens I have seen really deserve 0 stars. (This unit at least deserves the 1 star.) Its amazing to see all the uninformed masses buy these LCDs just so they can hang it on the wall. That is the worst and dumbest reason to buy one, since the pic is inferior to a good picture tube.
Customer Review: Excellent entry level HDTV
Read reviews before purchase and was not disappointed, clear and good colors easy setup and sleek design would recommend this for the price. In comparison with my Samsung 42" this one is faster surfing trough the channels.

Despite what the salesman at your local A/V shop tells you, sound proofing and sound treatment are not interchangeable terms in acoustics. Sound proofing is the process of creating a space that prevents any form of sound from escaping it, while sound treatment is the manipulation of a room's response to particular frequencies to create a balanced sound within the room. Although there are similar materials for both procedures, their expected outcomes and processes are nonetheless very different.

Sound proofing a room

If you're creating a space that will be used to contain a huge amount of sound and noise (like a death metal band's rehearsal space), the best way to do this would be to build a room within a room. The room itself should have a thick cement floor, walls and ceiling. This forms an outer shell which is the space's last line of sound proofing, and must be dense enough to absorb even the loudest low frequency sounds.

Within it, another room must be made whose walls, ceiling and floor (ideally) may be made of cement as well to ensure maximum density. Drywalls filled with sheetrock or fiberglass can also be used. This inner room must be smaller than the outer room and is generally placed in the middle of it, allowing for a space between them where the resultant escaping sound is trapped even more. This ensures that only a minimum of sound meets the walls of the outer room, thus increasing the chances of a 100% sound proofed room.

Treating a room

Treating a room requires less material than sound proofing it, but requires more patience and knowledge as there will be frequent listening tests and adjustments to be made in order to create a tailor-fit sound. There are three ways to treat a room, either by sound absorption, reflection or diffusion.

Sound absorption is important in an acoustically treated room/studio because it eliminates standing waves and early reflections from surfaces. Taming these undesirable sounds also creates a clearer and more precise stereo image, as in the case of a mix engineer's suite. Sound absorption is achieved through the placement of porous material such as cloth and fiberglass in strategic areas. These act as traps that absorb high and mid frequencies, and are generally placed around the room and on the ceiling. To trap low frequencies, denser absorbers (called bass traps) are placed in locations that form corners, such as between walls and in spaces where the room's wall's meet the ceiling.

Diffusion serves to scatter sound hitting its surface in random directions. Though less ubiquitous than absorbers and reflectors, diffusers serve an important purpose of preventing redundant travel of sound waves. Diffusers are generally crafted with a mathematical model as a guide to ensure the randomness of its surface. Once sound arrives on the face of the diffuser, it is distributed in an arbitrary manner.

The next time you decide to create a quality listening space, define first whether or not you would like to sound proof it, treat it, or even both. Knowing what you would want to do ahead will save you energy and money by letting you focus on what would be the priorities for your acoustic project.

Toshiba 19LV506 19-Inch 720p LCD HDTV with Built-in DVD Player (White)

The elegant design of the 19LV506 is the perfect complement to your kitchen decor, and you won't have to compromise shelf or counter space for style and performance. Multi digital tuning allows for tuning of standard cable channels as well as off-air digital broadcasts, in addition to digital "cable-in-the-clear" broadcasts. Using PC input, the 19LV506 can be used in conjunction with a computer, and the A/V input, HDMI and component input can be used for gaming and receiving HD broadcasts. The built-in DVD player makes this LCD HDTV a convenient and feature-rich viewing solution.
Customer Review: Great picture and sound issues are resolvable
I've had the Toshiba LV506 for about two months now. I bought it for my 18' Eco trailer and mounted it with an articulating arm which places it near the end of the bed. Some of the reviewers felt the sound wasn't up to par so I looked at alternatives. I'm used to a quality home theater with excellent surround sound in my living room but didn't want to spend a lot of money for the trailer install. Instead, I bought a two speaker computer system with subwoofer from Creative Labs and custom fitted this around and below the TV. This truly makes up for any short coming of the tv speakers and the wiring is very simple and straight forward. The only thing I need worry about now is keeping the volume low at night when staying in campgrounds and RV parks because the subwoofer does rock nicely. I purchased the Creative Labs computer system for under $30 with free shipping.
Customer Review: Best Buy!
In my opinion this tv is the best deal going for a 19 inch unit. Picture is very good and the DVD works great. Sound is a little tinny as it is with any tv this size. It takes large speakers for great sound and you cant fit them in a tv this size. Dont get me wrong. Sound is very acceptable within it's size limitations. The soft white color is a nice change from everything out there being black plastic. Remote is ergonomically correct. As always, first class service from Amazon. If you need a tv this size it is the way to go.

Customer Review: Simply put - buy it
I am somewhat of an audio/videophile and typically purchase high end components and accessories. For the price of these cables, I thought why not try them. Let me tell you, I cannot discern the difference in video or sound quality between these cables and cables 10 times the price. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

You may laugh and say that TV antennas are a leftover from a forgotten time. With your 500 channel satellite package or your 14 premium cable movie channels, you'd be right to scoff. Until you get your bill. Many viewers are embracing digital TV antennas to get the same audio quality and stellar that you pay big bucks for; all for free. There are several advantages to OTA (over-the air) reception and I'll discuss those along with how to choose the best antenna for HDTV in your area.

Broadcast HDTV channels are the best of the best
The digital television transition is bringing with it solutions to the 2 most annoying troubles of analog broadcasting; snow and picture ghosting. Digital TV channels allow for a crisp, ghost-free picture and clear sound. All local content is not yet broadcast in HDTV, so it's typical for stations to broadcast their digital TV channels in standard definition during the day and switch to a full widescreen HDTV broadcast during the "prime time" hours.

If you've never experienced what a digital TV antenna can do for you, here are a few reasons to consider one:

  • Over-the-air (OTA) digital TV channels are free. With the exception of the costs you incur for your antenna, receiving digital stations with an HDTV antenna is free.
  • You get access to all your local channels. Many satellite and cable companies will not carry all of the local stations in your area. On many systems, you have access to some of your local stations in exchange for an extra monthly fee.
  • Free access to out of town stations. It's possible that with the right equipment you can receive out of town stations and often be able to catch sporting events that are "blacked out" in your area.
  • Local digital TV channels are everywhere. Although the largest concentration of digital TV stations are in metropolitan areas, 90% of US viewers can easily get 6 or more digital TV channels.
  • OTA reception has the best picture quality. While your satellite or cable company may offer 500 channels, this comes with a price. They use data compression techniques that lower the audio and image quality of your broadcast often adding distortion or artifacts.

Of course in addition to your HDTV antenna, you will also need some sort of HDTV tuner to receive these digital TV channels, more often than not on newer TVs this ability is already built in. If you have an "integrated" HDTV, or it mentions an ATSC tuner, you are ready to rock. Also, if you currently subscribe to an HDTV package from DISH or DIRECTV, your receiver almost certainly includes an over-the-air HDTV tuner.

Finding your OTA digital TV channels
One of the best ways to find specific digital TV information for your address is the AntennaWeb.org website. You simply put in your address and it will return a list of the digital stations in your area. It allows you to look at both analog and digital TV stations in your area, or you can filter it to show digital broadcasts only. Since many stations broadcast from the same area, they will be clustered together on your results page. Now that you know what digital TV channels are available in your area, it's time to pick your antenna.

Customer Review: Very happy with my Amazon Purchase!
We love our new Samsung Plasma HDTV. The color and clarity is fantastic! We like it so much better than the LCD's. You can see it clearly from all angles, and fast motion sports and movies are no problem. We ordered it through Amazon and it was delivered on the date we were quoted in great condition. If you are considering this TV, it is totally worth every penny.
Customer Review: Excellent TV
I really am glad I purchased this TV. I read reports about it heating up at the corners but I have had no such experience with it. I like the picture and sound quality for normal TV and its not bad for movies either. I did hook up a receiver for 7:1 though. Its a great TV, sleek and I didn't realize for a month that I could touch the edges to control sound, power. Nice feature, The touch of red thing really isnt a big deal. I suppose there is a slight aesthetic appeal but not a buying consideration. Nice inputs/outputs and even a direct network input port - although I haven't used that feature.

The Sony Reader 700 is the much-anticipated next generation of the Sony lineup. It is actually a huge improvement over the 500 model, though not so much from the 505 model. Still, the touch screen capability might just make this the ebook reader that tops your list.

Most people are very curious about the touch screen on this device. Early reviews show that it is an excellent addition! It just seems so intuitive that an ebook reader should offer this functionality. Instead of having to deal with navigation buttons, you simply touch what you want. This should streamline your ebook reading experience tremendously.

The only problem here is that Sony has had to add the touch screen layer on top of their e-ink screen layer. This means that some of the contrast and "real book" feel that is noticeable on the PRS505 and Amazon Kindle are missing from this version. Still, that doesn't mean that books are totally unreadable, it is just a matter of getting used to it if you've enjoyed other screen types. It should be noted that some people are more in favor of the 505's screen, and choose that model over this one for that reason.

Another addition made to this reader is the backlit screen. This is a huge improvement for people who have been lamenting the fact that previous Sony Readers and the Amazon Kindle require a book light if you want to read them in the dark. That just isn't always possible for readers on the go! The Sony Reader PRS700 fixes that with their backlight.

There are some changes to things other than the screen as well. For example, you will enjoy a faster processor. This will make it easier for you to flip through the pages and navigate around the reader. Some users won't notice a huge difference, but if you are constantly using your reader it will be an improvement for you.

The internal memory of the device has been increased as well. This is a good thing if you don't like dealing with external SD cards. You can now store more items on a device that is the same size without buying anything extra. More books means more reading pleasure for you!

Other features you'd expect to be on the popular Sony Reader are present on this model as well. You can still highlight, mark pages, and easily navigate through your choices just like the previous models you've known and loved. The improvements on this model just might be enough to get you to step up to this version.

If you need a touch screen, back-light, faster processor, and more memory, the Sony Reader PRS700 is right for you. However, if screen contrast is your main concern you may want to stick with the PRS505. Either way, you can't go wrong when you get a device from the Sony Reader line.

Watch the video of the Sony Reader 700 review and see it in action. Only then can you decide if it's the right ebook reader for you!

Sharp LC26DV24U 26-Inch 720p LCD HDTV with Built-in DVD Player

Marketing description is not available.
Customer Review: very nice
This tv with the built in dvd player has a great picture. The only thing is the controls located on the tv are on the top and aren't easy to see which would only be a problem if it's wall mounted. Of course the remote solves that problem so be sure not to lose it!
Customer Review: LONG DELAYS and REMOTE SUX
LONG DELAYS BETW/ CHANNELS: - 2-SECOND DELAY when pressing channel up/down. - 4-SECOND DELAY when entering the channel#. Not sure if this is b/c the remote doesn't have an enter button. REMOTE SUX: - lacks ENTER button - lacks a LAST CHANNEL/RETURN button - sellers should start posting a pic of the remote also! I thought I could live with the DELAYS, but it was intolerable after a while. I ended up buying a refurb'd Vizio for my room and moved this one down to the kitchen, which was ok since I mounted it to the wall and can watch DVD's there now without any clutter of adding a dvd player.

Today sitting on a couch, we can flip through hundreds of T.V. channels, tune the T.V. to suit our requirements and perform a host of other operations without moving an inch. The T.V. remote control has become an indispensable gadget.

The first T.V. remote, called Lazy Bones, was made in 1950 by the Zenith Corporation. It had a wire attached to it, which connected it to a motor inside the T.V. By pressing the buttons on the remote, viewers could move the motor in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction to move up or down channels. But the remote wire caused plenty of accidents, with people constantly tripping over them.

Subsequent developments led to the manufacture of the wireless remote, which used ultrasonic sound, and then the modern T.V. remote, which uses infrared light to send signals to the T.V. The low-frequency infrared light is invisible to the human eye and can only be detected by the T.V. receiver.

The appearance of T.V. remote controls has also undergone many developments. From the bulky awkward boxes of the 50s, remotes evolved into the familiar peanut and the slim rectangular shapes with round or rectangle-shaped buttons. In 2006, remotes have become even more high-tech, with streamlined, easy-to-hold shapes and backlit LCD screens that display exhaustive menus of options. In fact, the new T.V. remote is more like a hand-held computer than a remote control device.

Intelligent T.V. remotes are in vogue today. These remote controls can interconnect appliances like your television and your computer; they even have digital program guides and activity control features that let them automatically switch on the T.V. when you put on the DVD player. With such smart T.V. remote controls, you can wield great power from your couch.

Remote Controls provides detailed information on Remote Controls, Radio Remote Controls, TV Remote Controls, Universal Remote Controls and more. Remote Controls is affiliated with Wireless Speakers.

There are many things in life to be desired, and in this technological age, its all about the latest electronic toys and gadgets. What I desire most is a good quality LCD TV, one with ultra sharp image, and for a affordable price at that! I have heard so many questions from people around me, asking me what they hype is about the LCD TV. Let me further elaborate on this so that you see LCD TVs from my point of view.

The Basics of LCD TVs

A liquid crystal display screen is consist of one thin liquid crystal layer between two glass plates. When electric current passes through the crystals, multi-colored pixels produce picture.

They are very light and thin, that's why they are now popular for computers. As prices go down, they are also becoming popular for TVs.

LCD screens are a quater inch to 4 inches thick, 2 inches to 65 inches wide. LCD TVs cost $50 for hand-held models, to $25,000 for 64" widescreen ones.

Features:

- They utilize digital technology that gives clearer and sharper picture compared to a standard TV.

- They are lightweight and thin which makes it possible to be anywhere or hung on the wall too.

- Most are manufactured with widescreen format. They're also compatible with HC and DVDS widescreen programming.

- They have flat screens so there is no distortion in picture as there is in curved TV tubes.

- Their screens have life span of up to 80,000 hours.

- They don't suffer screen burn-in as what tube TVs suffer.

If you are going to buy an LCD TV, remember that prices could vary between retailers. This is why checking out models at local stores is recommended, then check their prices online before buying one.

Go to your local stores and test different models. Test controls, watch picture and ask questions. Then when you've chosen the model that you like, check it online and see where you could purchase it with the best possible price.

If you spend your evening hours in front of the TV like I do, if you want lifetime lifetime quality, then HDTVs are for you.

Samsung LN32B550 32-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color

31.5" screen (measured diagonally) * widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio * Touch of Color high-gloss finish -- black with red accents * built-in digital (ATSC) and analog (NTSC) tuners for over-the-air TV broadcasts (antenna required) * built-in QAM cable TV tuner receives unscrambled programs without a set-top box (cable service required) * 1920 x 1080 pixels *

Recently the "Digital Television Transition and Public Safety Act" was passed. This sets February 17th - 2009, as the "final-cut-off-date" for Over-The-Air Analog TV Broadcasts. That means your 'Rabbit Ears' and the tall antenna on your roof will be useless except for lawn ornaments. To watch any TV presentation that originates outside of your home you will need new hardware. The minimum will be an HDTV with a digital tuner. The tuner can be integrated or external. If there happens to be an HDTV Transmitter close enough to your home, you can buy an HDTV antenna.

HDTV signals are line-of-sight, so if you are on the edge of a broadcast area there are Roof mounted antennas available. This is how the local broadcast network affiliates will transmit, if you still watch them. There will of course be satellite and cable available for the myriad extra entertainment venues they provide.

Some regions may need an HDTV antenna if your cable provider is slow bringing HDTV to your area or if your area has no cable. If you use one of the Satellite providers you should be in luck. They are transitioning to HDTV as we speak. Ain't Competition Great.

HDTV SPECIFICATION

The HDTV specification provides for three different types of HDTV, denoted by the number of lines of resolution and the signal type. They are:

  • 1080p (1080 lines, progressive scan)
  • 1080i (1080 lines, interlaced)
  • 720p (720 pixels, progressive)

Any TV not capable of displaying at least 720 lines is not 'HDTV ready' and any signal with fewer than 720 lines is not an HDTV signal. So, in order to be properly HDTV capable, a TV needs to be able to display at least 1280 pixels horizontally as well as at least 720 vertically.

The 'i' and 'p' in the HDTV specification refer to interlaced and progressive scan. The analog TV we've been watching for years is interlaced. That simply means that each frame of video is split into two fields. Each field contains alternate lines of the signal (one has the odd, the other the even) and is displayed for 1/60th of a second. Because it happens so fast, your brain interprets each frame as a single image. Progressive scan signals have no fields, they simply display each frame in its entirety for 1/30th of a second. This results in a higher quality image, particularly noticeable in fast-action broadcasts such as sporting events,

Once the decision is made as to how you are going to receive HDTV some decisions need to be made about how you will use the system. Your choices in display technology will depend on your most frequent use of the system. Depending on your interests you will want to evaluate different types of displays and/or controls.

Gamers will probably want different display qualities than a Home Theatre Buff, Sports enthusiast or Business users. Business applications such as Power Point & Spreadsheet display well with most consideration being given to the size of the audience. Avid sports viewers will need true high speed performance. I haven't been a Gamer since before Intel's P III, so their concerns will be addressed in another publication.

So what do you prefer?

A front-projection system uses a projector and a separate screen, and it projects images onto the front of that screen. This setup looks most like what you'd find in a movie theater -- the projection unit is completely separate from the screen. The projector can be placed on a table or mounted to the ceiling. The picture looks best when displayed on a high-quality screen, but a specially painted, flat wall will work as well.

Rear-projection systems look more like traditional televisions. They display images on the back of a screen rather than the front, and the projector is completely contained within the television itself. You can also set up a rear-projection system with a projector and a special screen, but the term is most often used to describe self-contained TV sets.

For that theatre experience at home, without the sticky floor and screaming kids, I prefer a front-projection DLP Projector for my Home Theatre Room. In my opinion DLP is best for Home Theatre Video's (DVD Etc. because of higher contrast and deeper black levels, Contrast (3000:1 for DLP, 1000:1 for LCD).

A projector of this type can project on a wall screen up to 120" in size with high contrast and deep black levels. DLP miniprojectors on the market are around 3 pounds. Most LCD projectors are five pounds or more. These differences are being narrowed as technology progresses. For Business applications such as Power Point & Spreadsheet display these are not noticeable concerns.

I'm a Home Theatre Buff so DLP meets my expectations. But there are other technologies with their own pluses and minuses.

Plasma Displays have great resolution and incredible color definition. With a resolution of 1366 x 768 a plasma display can give virtually a 3-D effect. This in combination with exceptional color reproduction can be quite stunning.

Plasma does have some issues though. They can be subject to 'Burn in' and there is a concern with 'Life Cycle'. At the price levels you will find in display technologies a screen that only lasts 20,000 to 25,000 hours before replacement is needed is problematic. This is possible with Plasma although NEC is working on raising their 'life cycles' to 60,000 hours.

LCD's have an average life cycle of 30,000. LCD Screens deliver a very good picture. The LCD was the first display to have 1080 line resolution. LCD is better in bright light conditions. LCD historically delivers better color saturation than you get from a DLP projector although this is a major focus of new research on DLP tech.

Compared to Plasma, LCD has slow reaction time if you are watch presentations focusing on split-second events such as NASCAR and other sports. Contrast, at 1000:1 is not great compared with Plasma & DLP. Full black is hard to achieve with LCD, black is usually a deep Gray. LCD may also be subject to a screendoor effect, at times seeming to show a division between pixels. Also a potential problem with LCD: Long Term Image Degradation. Although this would most likely happen after a comparable Plasma screen may show effects of a burn in or element failure.

There are so many factors to consider and so much information out there that many more articles can be written. So for now further research and choices are up to you.

The Pioneer KURO PDP-5010FD is a 1080p plasma television featuring an exceptionally bright and clear 50-inch screen. With a 16:9 aspect ratio widescreen, this television would be an ideal centerpiece for a home theater system in a medium-to-large-sized room.

The KURO PDP-5010FD has the full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels for the most detailed picture available. View larger. View product details.

Outstanding Video Performance
With a screen as large as this, high resolution becomes more important because it is more possible to view each pixel from a distance. The PDP-5010FD is a native 1080p display, meaning it has a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, the highest standard available. The black levels on plasma screens are generally superb and this unit is no exception, with blacks that are an intense, deep black and a picture that has very high contrast as a result.

The display features Pioneer's new ASIC video processing and scaling, which upconverts standard definition and other video resolutions for viewing at 1080p. A variety of noise reduction circuitry ensures a distortion-free picture at all times. Users can manually adjust the color temperature, gamma, and the levels of noise reduction circuitry and filters to fine tune the picture to their exact specifications.

An optical light sensor automatically adjusts the picture for optimal viewing depending on the ambient light in the room, compensating for night and day and for the content of the video, such as sports, movies, or news. The PDP-5010FD also has a film mode that eliminates motion judder and provides smoother playback of film content.

The PDP-5010FD is capable of remembering six picture settings for various A/V selections, with Movie, Game, Standard, Dynamic, and Optimum modes, as well as a user-defined preset. You can also set one of five aspect ratio presets in case you're watching standard-aspect 4:3 television. The television can also be set to auto-size when zooming is necessary.

Connections for all your Components
The PDP-5010FD has a large complement of inputs, including four independent HDMI 1.3 inputs (two with analog audio). Additionally, it has two component inputs, three composite inputs, and one S-Video input. There is a USB connection that can connect a storage drive for viewing of photos. A built-in CableCard slot enables the PDP-5010FD to work with cable services without an extra decoding box. An ATSC and two NTSC tuners are built in and fully integrated for use with picture-in-picture and picture-side-picture modes. The television has outputs for Dolby Digital/PCM, audio, subwoofer, SR+, and headphone. The TV Guide On-Screen programming guide is included as well.

Breathtaking Audio
The PDP-5010FD features a detachable bottom speaker with an integrated digital amplifier that improves the clarity and accuracy of the sound. The amplifier provides 17 watts of power for the two-way speakers and supports SRS WOW/FOCUS/TruBass surround sound.

The PDP-5010FD is backed by a 1-year limited warranty.

Customer Review: simply the best
After shopping and reviewing flat panel T.V.'S for over a year, all roads kept leading back to Pioneer. After finally biting the bullet and taking the plunge, I chose the KURO 5010. Well the moment of truth arrived when I recieved the T.V. and and got it hooked up to an HD signal. WOW! My wife and I couldn't believe our eyes. The picture is absolutely the very best I have ever seen. The in store picture just doesn't compare.(unless you see it play blue ray) The cable guy, after hooking up the set, was blown away. He said it smoked his brand new Samsung 52" LCD. In fact I felt a little sad for him as I could see his disappointment that he may have made the wrong choice. Watching football on this thing is amazing. You can see the individual blades of grass on the field. And no motion blur at all. My only problem now is,I have the stress of probably being the default host for the Super Bowl once my football buddies see it. A warning to anyone that buys this thing. Get your chores done for the day before you turn it on.
Customer Review: Fantastic Plasma, Only one problem...
I have been in awe of this television since I got it a month ago from Best Buy. I bought the four year service plan and unfortunately I believe I will need to use it. The panel has the best picture I've seen yet except for the Kuro Elite panel. The only flaw is a buzzing sound that changes pitch depending on what the panel displays. When I switch to power mode 2 it fades a little but it is still there and annoying. I hope that when the panel gets calibrated it will fix it but if not I will be throwing a fit to Best Buy to repair or replace the TV. Other than that the TV is great!

We often hear the word LCD but do we actually know what it actually means? LCD is the acronym for Liquid Crystal Display. These televisions have become popular because of their high-resolution and excellent image quality. The life duration of LCD TVs is known to be greater than that of Plasma TVs. Although this is true, it does not imply that LCD TVs will not deteriorate at all. They are also prone to damages and other electronic flaws. The twisting and untwisting of crystal is the principle why it is working.

Normally, the life expectancy for LCD TVs is approximately 60, 000 hours. In fact, some LCD TV companies claim that we can also expect LCD TVs to last even up to 80, 000 hours, when used under restricted settings. To achieve this longer life span, the consumer should control the temperature of the room, as well as the environmental condition and its preservation. Generally, the quality of pictures in LCD TVs will changes as years pass, this is because the TV has been exposed to great lights that could lessen the brightness of the screen. This happens even to other electronic gadgets. In this case, consumers must give significant importance to the life duration of the source of light or brightness of the LCD TV. They should check on the warranty of this feature because it is the main function that has effect on the clearness and quality of images.

To have great white stability in the LCD television, it is essential to preserve the high value or performance of the light source. The higher the quality of the back light bulb of the TV, the longer its lifespan would be. So when choosing a TV, it is better to invest on those branded once which usually comes with repair warranties than purchasing those with lower price but sacrificing the warranty which is very important. Users should also be aware that contrast level is also a factor in preserving the life span of the TV. If you use the lesser contrast level, the longer the lifespan of your LCD TV will be. And also, the higher the level of your ambient light, the lesser will be the life duration of the light source.

LCD TVs differ in terms of the placement of the light source. For example, some Sharp LCD TVs have this model wherein the light source is apart from the unit while other models have the light source built in them. The advantage of the first one is that even when the light source gets damaged, the TV will still be working. And the disadvantage for the TVs with built-in light source is that the LCD TV will become a trash if the light source deteriorates. Always keep in mind the warranty of the back light when purchasing a TV because it is the main factor why LCD TVs operates. LCD TVs cannot really last a lifetime; it has its own limitation. Unlike Plasma TVs, the lifespan of LCD TVs is not that long but they are easy to repair just like conventional televisions - that means if your TV has a maintenance warranty, you can still prolonged the life of your LCD TV after it wears off.

Customer Review: one word... Amazing
Pros: This is my first Samsung monitor (and it wont be my last). I did a lot of research on this monitor. Though there are several competitive similar products, I really loved the TV capability on it. I hooked up the basic channel cable and it was able to receive all basic channels. Cons: 1. Viewing angle. I have this TV at around 5 feet high and the viewing angle is not so great from my Bed. 2. Built in speakers are average quality. Not a big deal as I hooked up my desktop speakers. 3. No S-Video connection. This one is really important to me and I just have to find a S-Video to DVI converter. Overall, awesome product. I love it and recommend to anyone
Customer Review: If you're looking to use it only as a TV...
I have only used the T260HD as a television, not as a computer monitor, and I am quite pleased with it so far. It's perfect for a small bedroom or dorm room, but would be inefficient for a living room or den. Picture quality has been superb so far, in both 1080i and 720p programming. Sports especially are quite vibrant - everything from golf to NASCAR to the NBA playoffs. Some reviews suggest the speakers aren't top quality but personally, for use in a small room, it does the job. The included remote is serviceable and I liked that they included a DVI cable inside the packaging. The built-in TV tuner is definitely a plus. However, the auto-channel setup does take quite a while; anywhere between 20-30 minutes. There is no AV input - component only - so if you own a game console or DVD player, make sure you have component cables handy. There's only one component input too. Games look pretty good but this is one area where the low-quality speakers can be obvious. Overall, it's been a really solid investment so far.

If you're currently looking to buy a digital video projector, it is only right that you get the best one available in the market. Before the dawn of the new millennium, video projectors are seldom seen inside homes. They are mostly at use in offices and big corporations.

Gone were the days that projectors are merely used for board meetings and business presentations. Now, digital video projectors are inside regular houses.

Well, you don't need to have business presentations to buy projectors these days. In fact, the main elements of a home theater system are these devices. You are not really a home entertainment buff if you are satisfied with your widescreen plasma TV. Switch to a video projector and see the difference.

Build an exciting home cinema. You just need to find the right digital video projector. Buying a projector and a corresponding screen would make you a home theater. Plasma TV's are far more expensive. As such, you'll have a bigger and wider screen to enjoy. Just add a good sound system and you should be ready to get going.

Most movie theaters use these video projectors too. This is especially true for theaters playing digital format movies. With their powerful commercial projectors, a good image is produced on the screen.

It is quite possible to decide on how big or small the produced image will be. After all, it is your home theater that you're talking about. Think about it - a room in your house that resembles a cinema. Now, you don't have to pay much just to watch your favorite movies.

The fact that the new projectors are digital had taken the game higher. Furthermore these devices are able to process analog video signals too. Feed any video or movie clip source to these devices. Now, you can enjoy movies to its full effect. You can even watch your own self in your own movie. Well how does it feel being an actor?

Find the latest information about best rated digital projectors and how to choose a top rated digital lcd projector for all of your movie and presentation needs at the digital video projectors.

Microsoft XBOX Component HD Cables New HDTV AV High Def

THIS CABLE IS THE PERFECT ACCESSORY TO IMPROVE THE PICTURE ON YOUR XBOX CONSOLE!! MUST HAVE A HIGH DEFINITION TV TO ENABLE HIGH DEFINITION FEATURES!! Connect your Xbox console to your TV or receiver with component AV compatible input. Offers high picture quality. Cable length: 2 meters.
Customer Review: Decent component cables, but not perfect
These cables do what they advertise. The only small issue I've seen is that they are susceptible to interference from other electronic devices or power cables. Its a quick and easy fix, just don't run these cables directly across power cables or near PC power supplies and they work perfectly.
Customer Review: Very Good, not the best
You can get a way better image through HDMI ports. However this picture does come up very good, it is just not the best.

When has the occasion to see a Vizio HDTV arisen for you? As you watched the screen you were probably not thinking of the specific features that are used in the HDTV ratings. One type of feature you look at is the amount of pixels and the cross resolution in your televisions set. The quality of the native resolution is enhanced as the pixel count goes up.

Another aspect to take into consideration is the contrast ratio. The qualities of the images you see are specifically related to the light and dark pixels. There is a lot to keep in mind when searching for the perfect HDTV. Of course, once the decision as to which kind you are going to purchase for your personal pleasure, it will be a Vizio HDTV. Now you have to think about what you will be using it for. Movies? Have one handy. Ask to view it without the store messing about with the settings and you will greatly appreciate the results. Vizios sell themselves. If you want to be satisfied with your purchase cost to quality, you can't go wrong with a Vizio.

You must not forget that the HD means high definition. What if you have not made up your mind as to which make to buy? What if you really don't know who will provide you with the best for less? Do what so many others have done. Look it up online. Take a peak at what Vizio has to offer and why people are so contented with their Vizio televisions. Vizio is the hottest brand on the market.

Channel Master 2016 Mid-range outdoor rooftop HDTV antenna

receives digital & analog UHF and high-band VHF TV signals * range is 35 miles for both UHF (ch. 14-69) and high-band VHF (ch. 7-13) * 47"W x 22"H x 36-1/2"D *
Customer Review: Nice compact antenna
This picks ups stations about 15 miles away mounted on a pole about 5 feet above my roof. I am also using a CM3016 for picking up a broadcast from another compass heading. Overall decent antenna and would buy again. One note, make sure you use good cables with good connectors since I found the cheaper connectors allowed interference.

When you are in the market for a new television, resolution should be one of factors you should consider. If you have the money, perhaps you should consider buying an LCD 1080p HDTV.

What is the big deal about an LCD 1080p HDTV? Well for starters, that is about 1,920x1,080 pixels which many consider as the Holy Grail of HDTV resolution. This is because it is the best that television companies have been able to come up with which is an improvement from the 720p.

The 1080p is an improvement from the 1080i. The big difference is that images are no longer in an interlaced format but rather sequentially in a single pass making it clearer for people to see the images on the screen.

Keep in mind that when you do buy an LCD 1080p HDTV, its price will be much higher than an EDTV or enhanced definition TV screen because it costs more to make. But does it really make a difference? A lot of experts in the industry say no.

This is because unless you are in the business of video editing or extreme graphic use, such features are not needed when you turn on the television to watch your favorite show or movie. Second, people in Hollywood have no intentions of to produce shows using the 1080p format.

But then again, there is hope because in the battle between high definition and blu ray, the second one is sometimes the format being used when a movie is released in DVD. For this to work, you need to buy an HD DVD player since the data is encoded in 1080p.

Such information will not make you jump for joy because most broadcasts are still done using the 1080i and 720p format and there are no plans to switch to 1080p due to bandwidth issues.

Will there come a time that this will happen if such issues are resolved? Probably not because it is not worth the time or the money. An independent test showed that they did not see any difference when they watched a show using this or the previous format so why even bother.

So why make it in the first place? Simply because there is competition between plasma and LCD televisions. Manufactures think that better pixel quality equals more sales but it is just one selling point and not the big picture when the consumer decides to go out and buy a new television.

In the end, what we are trying to say is that you are better off with a television either a plasma or an LCD that is 720p. If you want to intensify your viewing pleasure, use the extra dollars you save to buy a better sound system.

But if you are not watching a movie, you will need a high definition signal through an antenna, cable or satellite because nothing will appear on screen without it. You should also get the proper accessories like the box and a satellite dish to get clear signals from the network.

The LCD 1080p HDTV is only good if you plan to use it for work. Otherwise, this is something you should forget because even if you play video games with it like Xbox 360 or Playstation 3, this is made in the 720p format so there is no point even if you can make adjustments in the user settings.

Customer Review: 768p, not 1080p
Contrary to the listing ("Hitachi UT32V502 32-Inch 1080p 120Hz UltraThin 1.5-inch Deep LCD HDTV with Matching Table Stand") this is a 768p display, not 1080p. See the Hitachi website for more information. I nearly bought this TV -- if I had, I'd be fit to kill now. This is a serious offense against the consumer, whether it was deliberate or a mistake.

Samsung has come out with there new up to date High Definition Television models and they are most definitely top of the line when you look at the product, price and overall flexibility of these new televisions. The new 800 Series will amaze you from the word go, with a 120 HZ refresh rate this series will make past models look much slower in comparison.

The Samsung LN52A860 Ultra-thin 52" 1080p LCD HDTV with 120Hz refresh rate is a great priced product as well. Samsung is often overlooked when you think of top grade Electronics with many people looking to Phillips, Sony or even Toshiba before they would by a Samsung product, but with the High Definition products they are putting out these days you cannot look past them because of they great medium prices on top grade products.

Some of the the things that intrigue me about the Samsung Ultra-Thin High Definition Television is the 52" widescreen HDTV and the Touch of Color with high-gloss finish, both of these features make viewing Sports, High Speed Action movies and any of your other favorite Television shows a treat. This High Definition Television also has built-in digital (ATSC) and analog (NTSC) tuners for over-the-air TV broadcasts and built-in QAM cable TV tuner receives unscrambled programs without a set-top box. These are some great extras that you will not find in all other High Definition Televisions.

Since this Television was just released less than 10 days ago you can be one of the first people to own this top product.

Customer Review: Picture is Beautiful, Sound is Awful
We bought this TV for our bedroom. The picture is absolutely beautiful but we can barely hear the sound! The sound on the display is measured by a bar that goes from 1-100 and when we go to bed it has to be set on at least 50 just to be able to barely hear it. If you are going to buy this TV I would highly recommend purchasing a small set of speakers to go with it.
Customer Review: very happy customer
This is my second samsung lcd tv purchase through Amazon. Not only am I happy with the service through Amazon but I am very happy with my Samsung purchase. I will be purcahsing a third samsung tv in the future. I will recommend this product to everyone.

It is all an issue of Image Resolution

There are currently a number of different HDTV formats as adopted by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), based on 720p, 1080i, and 1080p - using refresh rates that vary between 24 Hz and 60 Hz.

The main difference between these HDTV formats is one of image resolution.

The 720p is on the lower-end of the scale with an image resolution of 1280 pixels by 720 lines. The other two formats both support 1920 pixels by 1080 lines. In other words, both support the same image resolution but there is a significant difference in the way the 1080i (interlaced) and the 1080p (progressive) formats build up the image.

Surely, image resolution in fixed-pixel displays is a very HOT topic with many HDTV buyers. For many, the obvious choice is to opt for the latest 1080p HDTV - also referred to as ultra-HD or full-HD by some manufacturers ...but there is a price to pay to get the latest in HDTV technology.

On the other hand, the way the 1080i and the 720p formats build up the image may render the lower resolution 720p format more suitable to display certain image content.

In other words, do not simply jump to conclusions as to which HD format is best. As we will see in this article, each of these different HDTV formats has got its strengths and weaknesses.

1080i: Up to a few years ago, this was considered as the reference standard in HDTV. Nearly all first-generation HDTVs were rear-projection sets that supported this standard.

This format boasts a picture resolution of 1920 pixels by 1080 horizontal lines that are painted on the screen in two interlaced halves (hence the 'i' in the '1080i' format) - by first painting all 540 even-numbered lines on the screen (also referred to as the even-field), and then proceed with the painting of the odd-numbered lines (odd-field). These two fields together form a single frame of 1080 lines.

In the process, the screen is painted 60 times per second (50 times in a PAL signal) - each time painting only half of the lines per frame, with the entire screen being painted in two passes 30 times every second.

Because of the way the interlaced process paints the screen, all picture information contained in adjacent odd and even lines in an interlaced image is 1/60th of a second out-of-synch with the next or previous line. This difference between the two halves of the picture would show up in what are referred to as 'interlaced artifact'. This in itself will impact on the type of image content that is best displayed on an interlaced display.

720p and 1080p HDTV: In contrast, in all progressive-scan formats - 480p (EDTV), and 720p and the 1080p HDTV displays - all scanning lines in a single frame are displayed sequentially in a single pass. This means that a progressive scan image is complete in itself. This also explains why progressive images look better when objects in the pictures are in motion.

The Bottom Line

The 1080i format is more widely supported by manufacturers and broadcasters; broadcasters however would normally broadcast only in either 720p or 1080i but not both. This should not be much of an issue in that any HDTV set you buy should be able to display pictures in any HDTV format by up-converting or down-converting to its native format, i.e. the one in which it's designed to produce a picture.

Theoretically, from a pixel-count perspective, 1080i supports better spatial resolution than a 720p HDTV. In theory, 1080i supports a pixel count of over 2 million pixels as against the 0.92 million pixels supported by 720p HDTV, but due to limitations associated with interlacing, the actual difference in effective resolution between 720p and 1080i is almost negligible. What's more, a 720p display is capable of a better flicker-free picture when it comes to fast moving action movie scenes and sports.

The situation with 1080p HDTV is totally different than that of 1080i. 1080p supports the full 1920 x 1080 pixels (2.07 million pixels) while at the same time, enjoys the added benefit that all 1080 lines are displayed in a single pass.

In other words, 1080p HDTV combines the superior resolution of the 1080 format with the smooth stable image of a progressive scan format.

N.B: It is worth mentioning here that interlaced formats aren't really an option in fixed-pixel displays (DLP and LCD rear-projection as well as plasma and LCD flat-panel). This also explains why display manufacturers are shifting away from the 1080i and instead moving directly from 720p to 1080p HDTV.

And What about 1080p HDTV Sets?

Surely, 1080p HDTV represents the latest developments in HD Television technology. A few of these sets have already started to hit the market.

Not surprisingly, there is a premium one has to pay to get the latest and best in the HDTV world. 1080p HDTV sets do not come cheap but the price gap between a 720p and a 1080p has already fallen below the $500 mark from an average of $1,000 to $2,000 a year ago.

Should you opt for a 1080p HDTV Set, and are these sets worth the extra expense?

Well, there is no straight answer here. It all depends on what are your requirements, yet there are a few facts you should know before making any decision:

  • Surely, these sets are capable of producing spectacular results with ultra sharp images. But whether you will be able to see the difference in image quality between a 720p display and a 1080i signal displayed on a 1080p HDTV display depends on your TV viewing distance and screen size, more than on the screen native resolution. (It is not the scope of this article to discuss the TV viewing distance but more info in this respect is available at our site at http://www.practical-home-theater-guide.com/Tv-viewing-distance.html)
  • In reality, it would be very difficult to detect any difference in image detail between 720p and 1080i/p HDTV material on the smaller sets from 10-feet away. Sit closer and feed your 1080p HDTV set with a good quality HD source, and you will start to see the difference.
  • Further more, with most of today HD broadcasts, you will be hard pressed to see a difference in picture quality when you compare the image on current 720p sets versus the latest 1080p HDTV models. Surely, if you are thinking of going really big, then the extra image resolution would make the difference. But keep in mind that at present, true 1080p HDTV material is almost non-existent. What's more, none of the major networks has announced 1080p broadcasts - and it is unlikely that they will make such a move in the near future considering the bandwidth requirements.

Nevertheless, one cannot but remark that the whole equation in favor of 1080p HDTV sets has started to change. There are a number of factors that are pointing towards the latest in HDTV - and it is not just the marginal difference in price between 720p and 1080p HDTV sets. In particular, there is the advent of high definition movie players; these will be taking a dominate role in the distribution of off-air HDTV content. It is true that present day first generation HD-DVD do not output in 1080p but first generation Blu-ray will offer it, so HD-DVD will surely have to follow suit at some point in the near future. Meanwhile, 1080p is quickly becoming the new de-facto gold standard for HDTVs, and while - ironically - most pre-2006 1080p HDTV sets did not support a 1080p connection, 1080p inputs are set to become among the basic common supported features in nearly all 2006 HDTVs.
