At the time, Back to the Future was showcasing exactly how far the world had advanced in terms of technology. Marty's clock radio is umber retro in today's eyes, as it's lacking a digital display, the video camera they use to film Einstein's time travelling exploits would never fit into a handbag for a night out, personal cassette players have been replaced by iPods and the TVs have most certainly changed a bit too. Manufacturers are constantly going backwards and forwards, improving or removing what was before as well as planning for what can be. In this article, we will focus on the bad business practices and outright fraud prevalent in many TV repair shops around the country. As an electronics technician with 27 years of experience, I can tell you what really goes on with your expensive electronic equipment, when you're not looking. But let me warn you. After reading this, you may be shocked, appalled, even sickened by how you may have been taken advantage of in the past. Just take comfort in the fact that you now have the information you need to next time choose a servicer that is truly a professional. OK, fasten your seat belts. Here we go.

FREE ESTIMATES Let's get to the bottom of this idea right now. Yes, it sounds like a good idea for you and the shop. But this is what really happens when you drop the unit off. Because the shop has not been paid for the time it takes to diagnose the problem, the technicians are forced to repair the easy ones first. That means that after a quick look at your set, if any real troubleshooting is required, they put it back on the shelf. Where it will sit. And sit. And sit. Now here's where it gets interesting. When the service manager or owner asks the tech the unit was assigned to (if such a system is in place) what is going on with it, He'll quickly say it's a dog. In our jargon, a "dog" is a really tough, highly technical repair that requires lots of time.

The service manager will now ask the tech to get back on it ASAP and resolve the problem so that the repair estimate can be given to the customer. By this time, at least a week has passed and the customer has not been called yet. When the customer has waited long enough and finally calls, no one knows whats going on and in some cases, has no idea even where the unit is.

Sound familiar? Has this ever happened to you? I thought so. But it gets better.

The technician will now spend a little more time on the unit. If he can't fix it now, he will appease the service manager by "stalling". In other words, he will order a part that will take a week or two to get, but will not fix the problem. This way he can put the real problem off until then.

And there you were thinking that the part you may have been required to pay a deposit on before it was ordered would fix your set. I'm afraid not. And this gambit can go on for months. This is exactly why you should always use a shop that charges a small bench charge to look at your set. This will usually go toward the cost of the repair, and covers the shops' time and materials. Typically, your job is done faster, and by a technician with a higher skill level.

SENDING A "TECHNICIAN" TO LOOK AT YOUR SET IN YOUR HOME That seems to be an everyday thing, doesn't it? But you are being deceived. In this scam, the person looking at your expensive big screen TV is NOT a trained technician. They are only there to take the back off, give it a quick once over, and then tell you it could probably be fixed for "Y" dollars or less. But he won't tell you what the problem with the unit is. Of course, he will collect a pickup and delivery fee while he's there, even though you called them because their ad said all repairs are done in the home.

Practices like this are a big problem all over the country and should give you cause for concern. Why? Because a REAL technician can tell you exactlywhat the problem is and what the cost will be to repair it. As well, it may be a small problem that can be fixed on the spot. Only an experienced service person knows the difference. Not to mention the unskilled person looking at your TV may cause unintentional damage to it. Think it doesn't happen? I've seen far too many broken picture tubes and broken boards caused by people touching something they shouldn't have or tugging on wires or parts trying to look like he knows what he's doing when the customer is looking over his shoulder.

So make sure the shop is sending you a skilled professional and not a poser. At the end of the day, this is the much better program for everyone.

USING "GENERIC" PARTS TO FIX YOUR UNIT, WHILE TELLING YOU THEY ONLY USE FACTORY ORIGINAL PARTS This is a huge problem. In my opinion, it is outright fraud. Because of the high level of sophistication of modern electronic product, factory original parts are a must. In high quality products like Sony and Panasonic, If the shop uses anything else the unit will fail and have to be serviced again at their cost. If your just repaired unit failed again after about a week, this is probably what happened. And a word of warning here. If audio or video equipment is involved that uses expensive software, be especially careful about the shop you choose. Equipment re-failure could mean irreparable damage to discs, video tapes, or expensive speaker systems.

Accept no substitutes or excuses! Make em' fix it right the first time and have them bring you the old parts.

STEALING YOUR GOOD PARTS AND REPLACING THEM WITH THEIR BAD ONES, CLAIMING THAT YOUR UNIT IS "NOT WORTH REPAIR." This is so they can fix the dogs that are hanging around in the shop at no cost. As well, this phrase is also used to save face because the technicians employed there are not skilled enough to fix your unit, but enough of it works to repair something else they have. The theft can be anything from individual parts all the way up to entire boards and sub-assemblies. Happens all the time. The only way to fight this problem is to get your unit back in the same condition (this means with the same problem) that it had when you gave it to them. Not much else you can do otherwise.

INTENTIONALLY DAMAGING YOUR UNIT Many unscrupulous shops will damage your unit to the point of making it un-reparable if you refuse their estimate. The reason is that they don't want you to take it to another shop and have it fixed AFTER they have told you what the problem is.

This is a despicable practice and is a huge problem in places like Florida. This type of shop will even remove the labels showing the model and serial numbers (this should be illegal) or cover them with tape so that when the tape is removed, the label is unreadable. This is wrong because many models of TV's, VCR's, and other products look almost just alike, and without the model numbers the unit cannot be properly repaired. You may as well just throw it away.

Again, the only defense is to make sure you get it back exactly the way you gave it to them.

GOUGING CUSTOMERS WITH OUTRAGEOUS PRICES ON VERY SIMPLE REPAIRS This is another big problem. What can I say? This type of business owner will play on the fears of someone that has no knowledge of anything electronic and take advantage of them. To be sure, charging someone $85 to replace a old fuse that simply gave up is just plain wrong. But unfortunately it happens. Sometimes you will see shops like this exposed on one of those "Caught On Tape" TV shows. I say that's too bad for them. Fortunately, there's no way back from that kind of publicity once it happens. Just make sure YOU stay away from them once they have been caught.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

Here are a few additional ideas you need to know to keep from getting scammed. Keep these tips in mind:

1.Go in to the shop and take a look around. Is it littered with wrecked TV's and other types of products? Is it dirty and disorganized? Clearly, don't leave your expensive plasma TV in such a place.

2.Make sure you drive by the place on a regular basis and make sure it's open. Why should you do this? Because if the place is locked up tight when it should be open, say around 10 in the morning, you are most likely involved with a shop that is struggling to pay it's bills. This owner obviously has more important things to do than concentrate on repairing customer product.

3.Do they have the required equipment to properly repair your unit? Take a look around and see for yourself. Modern electronics are extremely complicated, sophisticated devices. The failures that they have can be so subtle, that it takes highly advanced equipment and techniques to resolve the problem. If they don't have the proper tools, your set may be the next one sitting in the junk pile. Don't risk it. Do yourself a big favor and take the set somewhere else.

Microphones have undergone a lot of changes over the years. Some designs stayed and others became a part of vintage microphones. Microphone, popularly known as mike or mic, is one of the primary elements in an audio or music system.

The main job of the mic is to convert sound into an electrical signal. It has a large number of applications as in music production system, telephone, hearing aid, motion picture production, etc.

The History & Development of Vintage Microphones

The early 1930s saw the movie industry trying out new technology to record musical scores. However, the range of microphones offered was low. In came the MGM Studios, in Culver City, CA, to try out the newly invented cardioid mic made by the Siemens Co, Germany. It was used to make "Naughty Marietta" with the likes of Jeanette McDonald and Nelson Eddy.

Dynamic or condenser microphones were much smaller in size than the Siemens' version of the cardioid mic. There was a constant effort made to reduce the size of the microphones to facilitate its use.

James Cannon of Cannon Electric Co. in Los Angeles, CA, was told to build up a connector for the mic. His creation was a 6 pin connector which later on became the prototype of P-type connector, which turned out to be an instantaneous success. 3 conductor connector for camera cable was made then which put Cannon plug to history from 1929 onwards.

Mason and Marshall of the Bell Laboratories made a blueprint of a tubular microphone in 1939. The design was such that it utilized a single element and acoustical tubes of different sizes. It helped in the pickup of directional music. The tubular design was the forerunner of the modern day mics.

Electret condenser microphone is a part of the vintage microphones as it has a history dating back to 1928. It used polarized wax plates. Bogen offered this type commercially under the name Voltage Velotron. The WWII saw the development of wax electret mikes. The Japanese used it in their field devices. However, they did not become very popular due to their instability.

In 1962-1965 the electret mics got their diaphragm made of a metalized thin foil of mylar or teflon. Sony, in 1968, created the then finest electret condenser microphone. That too has now moved into vintage microphones.

The latest great thing in home theater displays is the emergence of 1080p resolution displays. p stands for progressive, which means the screen fills all at once at 1/60th of a second, versus i for interlaced, which means every other line, then the other half of the full picture, each field displaying at 1/30th of a second.

At this time, there is no source for broadcast 1080p programming. Instead, we have 1080i: two interlaced fields make a frame, at 1/30th second for each field.

Finger it out!

Take your fingers and spread them apart. That's a crude example of interlaced. When you bring the hands together, you combine both fields and you get the whole picture (one frame). It happens fast enough that you don't notice the effect unless there's motion on the screen, then you might see a difference in the smoothness of the motion.

Progressive is all the fingers at once. 720p is fewer pixels, faster: 1/60th second per frame.

1080 = 1920 x 1080 pixels | 720 = 1280 x 720 pixels

Till recently, HDTVs were either 720p or 1080i. Most TV transmissions were 1080i. I believe ABC adopted 720p because it would have shown sports with better pictures. I also remember back when Panasonic Broadcast underwrote ABC (as 720p) - or at least Monday Night Football. Fox and ESPN now also do 720P. The others are 1080i.

The new 1080p sets don't have the front end circuitry to actually receive that resolution. But, again, nothing is transmitting that res anyway. What the advantage is, is how these sets show 1080i - they have the pixel count to do it without trouble. They deinterlace the transmission and present it full frame without throwing away any detail. A 720p set has to downconvert a 1080i signal. In that downconversion you can lose some detail.

(BUT) OH SAY CAN YOU SEE?

But there's a more important issue - can you really see the difference in resolution between 1080i and 1080p? Tests of visual acuity to determine the resolution required of a television transmission system by the BBC's J.O. Drewery and R. Salmon determined that at 9 feet, a 50 inch screen at 720p's resolution will give you all the resolution you can see! At 9 feet, a 56 incher needs 1080i to avoid seeing the pixel structure.
If you sit farther or closer, you may need more resolution.

1080i vs 720p: MOTION CHANGES EVERYTHING

Motion is different issue. If you want to see motion clearly, then live action 720p is what looks best, compared to 1080i. Here's why: the information content of 720p is about the same as 1080i, though what it lacks in spatial resolution, it makes up for in temporal resolution (because the picture is at 1/60th of a second, not 1/30th x 2.) On 1080i, this would show as flickered or jagged edges on bright horizontal objects (like in the background of a camera pan.)

The good news? As the retailers hawk 1080p, you might find a killer deal on a 720p set and not give up anything in what I'll call 'effective' picture quality to get it.

HD, HDTV and High Def, what do I need to understand about these terms mean when I am looking to purchase a TV?

Unfortunately asking for help at a local electronics super store only confuses the issue as they explain things in technical language that you may not understand either.

So lets try to explain things in a simple manner so that anyone can understand it. This way you won't either over spend -- or not get what you are hoping for, while shopping for your next TV set.

So Lets Start At The Beginning...What Exactly Is HDTV?

Simply put, HD stands for High Definition. It describes the quality of the broadcast signal as well as the quality of the picture on your television screen.

Did You Know That There Are Different Levels Of HD Quality Available Today?

As of right now the 3 levels of HD available depending on the TV you buy are:

A) 720p

B) 1080i

c) 1080p

You Are Probably Wondering What Do These Numbers Mean?

The numbers correspond to the lines of resolution on your TV screen. First lets discuss a standard TV, which only shows a 480i picture. This means there are 640 vertical pixels x 480 horizontal pixels that make up your televisions picture.

It only makes sense then that the more pixels or lines of resolution you have...the better your picture quality is going to be.

So Then How Many Pixels Does An HD Plasma or LCD Have?

As discussed befor, there are different grades of HDTV broadcasting available.

A) 720 p has 720 vertical pixels and 1,280 horizontal pixels

B) Both 1080i and 1080p have a resolution of 1,920 vertical pixels x 1,080 horizontal pixels

It only makes sense then that a 720p has a better picture than a typical 480 TV, and a 1080i TV or 1080p TV has a clearer picture than a 720p plasma tv.

Does that make sense?

So What Does The "p" And The "i" Represent?

The "p" or the "i" refers to how the picture is refreshed on your tv screen. The "p" stands for "progressive", while the "i" stands for "interlaced".

Now what does this mean?

Imagine taking a paintbrush covering your entire TV screen with one stroke. That's what happens with a "Progressive" broadcast signal. When you have a 720p or 1080p television all 720 or 1080 lines of resolution are refreshed on your TV at the same time.

On the other hand when it comes to a 1080i or "interlaced" TV, you would take that same paintbrush and just pain in every other line. First all of the even lines of resolution are pained in. Then 1/30 of a second later all of the odd lines are painted in, etc, etc.

Can you see how a 1080p picture would provide a crisper picture then a 1080i?

But there is something you need to know before spending the extra money on a 1080p... All cable and satellite channels are currently broadcasted in 1080i picture. That's right...even if you had a 1080p TV-It would offer no better picture then a 1080i.

When Might You Consider Buying A 1080P

A) You are the type that MUST HAVE the latest and greatest technology

B) You are willing to wait for the cable companies to start broadcasting in a 1080p signal

C) You own or are planning to spend $1000 to buy a Blueray or HD DVD player since they are the only equipment that can produce a 1080p signal that you can see on a 1080p TV.

My suggestions:

If you have never had an HDTV before...anything you get will be an unbelievable difference in your movie experience. If your budget can only afford a 720p-- then go for it. You will absolutely just love the improvement over your old 480i!

If you can afford to spend a few dollars more then go with the 1080i television, you will not regret it.

Panasonic introduces three professional 1080p HD plasma displays including the world's largest plasma panel at 103 inches. Simply, the larger your screen size, the more detail you need your display device to deliver. Panasonic's new plasma panels incorporate a host of leading-edge technologies to reproduce clear, brilliant images with exceptional detail, true 1080p resolution and outstanding depth perception. The new models also provide smooth, sharp motion images, true-to-life color and the equivalent of 4, 096 gradation steps. With their superior imaging performance, Panasonic's new plasma display panels unleash the full capability of 1080p HD.

We have summarised below some of the important factors to consider when buying a HDTV. We hope it will be of help to you.

1. Pixel resolution - look for one that is 1080p. These TVs provide a native resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, the highest so far, with the potential to display all 1,080 lines in the most common high-definition format, called 1080i.

2. Contrast ratio - the higher the better, something over 5000:1. Firstly, the contrast ratio doesn't make a whole lot of difference on an LCD panel TV. The contrast ratio regulates how dark your blacks are and how light your whites are. The contrast ratio is really only important on plasmas because of the speed at which they degrade. Because LCDs don't have the same problem, they don't need a contrast ratio as high. Also, keep in mind that there is no universal standard for contrast ratio. But, for an LCD, the higher the better.

3. Response time - the lower the the better. For fast moving pictures with high contrast, you would need Plasma.

4. Hi-definition inputs (HDMI) - To enjoy the benefit of high-definition, your cable or satellite box must have hi-def (HDMI) outputs - the box must be hi definition. Look for multiple 2-3 HDMI inputs - At least one for cable/satellite, and one for DVD. Maybe a 3rd for a video game console or for a PC.

5. Go for common brands. Their reliability is better.

6. Warranty: Make sure your retailer gives you proper information about warranty.

Nikon digital camera problems are few, but they do exist. Some users of the point and shoot Coolpix digital cameras have problems understanding or using the features and functions of the digital cameras. Nikons digital camera problems are few except for the functions. You do need to know how to operate a SLR camera or you will have poor picture quality. The SLR digital cameras are not for beginners. The user's manual does take quite some time to read and understand all the features and functions of the camera. You will need to experiment with different setting and shoot modes before taking any professional pictures. For the most part, Nikon does not have many problems with their digital cameras.

Since Nikon digital camera problems are more user error than it is the camera, you would be wise to read the manual before operating any of the Nikon cameras. The cameras themselves are excellent cameras for the money. If you have battery problems, you might need to consult with a repair person to see if there is a problem with the batteries. Sometimes on the Coolpix digital cameras, the lens will not retract if the battery goes dead. This could present a problem, but can be corrected by an authorized Nikon repair person. Other than that, you will find that Nikon digital cameras are well worth the money and deliver quality images.

While Nikon is one of the best when it comes to high quality digital cameras, they're certainly not the only game in town. There are equal and better cameras around, you just need to know where to look.

Buying a $100 laptop is a good idea if you are looking for something cheap that does not have to have all the bells and whistles. If you are only using your laptop to browse the internet, check you email, play simple games, or just checking your email. Most people do not need to have a power processor or 80 gig bites of space. So getting a laptop for $100 is not necessarily a bad idea.

What you should be looking for?

Well I recommend a laptop that has at least 1.4 GHz processor. That will give you the power you need to do all the basic thing you need it for. That will not limit your selection too much. I would also recommend getting a laptop that does not Vista installed on it, at the time of this writing it is still too buggy. Stay with Mac OS 10 or Windows XP. Do not go any lower in platforms, like window millennium. Avoid Window Millennium like the plague! Trust me you are not getting a deal if you buy a windows Millennium Laptop, you are buying a head ache!

You will also need about 40 to 60 gig bites of hard drive space. This will give you enough to storage space for music and movies. If you have a zillion song or movies you want to download go for 60 gig bites or higher, they take up a lot of space on your hard drive. If you are in this category you might also want to look into an external hard drive, or might need a laptop that is a little more than a $100.

Make sure the laptop has USB 2.0. If it does not you will have a lot of trouble hooking up to other external devices, like thumb drives and possibly printers. If it does not have that just be aware that you are limited.

Make sure it can hook up to a T1 cable and has or can use a wireless card. This is very important. You will very slowed down if your laptop does not have these things. Part of the fun of laptop is that you can take it everywhere. Today most coffee shop have free wifi, so will want to take advantage of that.

Make sure you get a laptop with a 12 inch screen or higher. I like the resolution to over 1000 pixels. This will you the enough screen real estate.

One place I would be very cautious buying a laptop from is Craiglsit or Yard Sales. You can get a really good deals there, I would just make sure it one not stolen, and two is meet all of the requirements. Always meet people on craiglist during the day, never at night. If you decide to buy your laptop online, check the store rating, they often provide good feed back and help you weed out the scams.

Promotional pricing may also be available from time-to-time.

The TiVo service can keep track of the latest television schedule, and can automatically record every episode of your favorite television shows, even if the time or day the program is to air changes. All you have do is find the television show that you want by searching or browsing the listings, and then specify whether or not you want to record all of the episodes or just the newer ones. This feature is called the season pass. TiVo is great for a woman on the go who wants to keep up with her soaps or a man that may miss his favorite team's game. There are no limits for the TiVo as long as you can already view the channel through your current system. TiVo will change the way you watch television and will actually save you time as well. I highly suggest that every home has at least one TiVo in the household.
